As mentors we offer a relationship based upon our leadership experience to support individuals by using our greater knowledge and understanding of the work to support your further development. This is often offered as part of a wider assignment, but can also be offered for a specific assignment.
The focus of mentoring is usually, but not exclusively, on leadership and career development.
The words mentor and coach are sometimes used interchangeably, and it is clear that many of the same skills are needed by both– the ability to listen, ask good questions, give feedback, challenge and support, for example, are key to both roles even if the purpose of the role is different.
